Who is the most grateful person you know? What are some examples of how that person shows gratitude?

When have you felt most taken for granted? What was said or not said that heightened that feeling? How did you respond internally?

Why is it difficult for most people to express gratitude, especially face-to-face?

Engage:

Read Philippians 1

The following idea was shared in this weekend’s message: “What some people perceive as a right, other people receive as a gift.” In what ways do you see this played out? How is entitlement an enemy of gratitude?

Read 1 Corinthians 4:7. Discuss the difference between a receiving faith versus an achieving faith.

In Philippians 1:3-4, Paul says he is thankful when he remembers. What do the following truths teach about forgetting and remembering? Deuteronomy 6:12, 8:10-14.

Are you often guilty of “retroactive gratitude,” realizing after something is over or someone is gone that you appreciated what you had.

The three main ideas of this message are:

  1. Gratitude is the ability to experience life as a gift.

  2. Gratitude is the gift that allows us to enjoy other gifts.

  3. Without gratitude, our lives degenerate into envy, dissatisfaction and complaining.

Which one hits you the hardest? Why?

Read Philippians 2:14-16. How common is complaining in the world that you inhabit? (your own life and your people) What promise is made? What opportunity awaits if we don’t live in this way like the world around us?

Read Luke 17:11-19. What stands out to you?

Apply:

Think about some ways you can express gratitude this week to some people in your life. To whom do you owe a verbal debt of gratitude? Who has or is facilitating your progress, but hasn’t heard from you lately?

Spend some time privately in prayer thanking God for what He’s given you and blessed you with. Express your gratitude to Him for who He is and what He has done.

This week’s memory verse is 2 Timothy 1:7. Spend time with your family and group learning it together.
